Tim Tebow, Pope Benedict Named on List of Least Influential People

Pope  Benedict XVI
Men's magazine GQ recently released its list of "The 25 Least Influential People of 2013," which includes Christian quarterback Tim Tebow, a pope emeritus and the president of the United States.

The third annual list is a "collection of people who've overstayed their turns in the spotlight and used their fame for not a good [expletive] thing," according to GQ.

Tebow is ranked number 12 on the list, sandwiched between Lady Gaga (no. 11) and San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver (no. 13). Tebow is also joined on the list by a former University of Florida and New England Patriots teammate, Aaron Hernandez (no. 7), who was charged with first-degree murder this year.

"[Tebow's] NFL career blissfully ended this summer when he was cut by the Patriots, presumably because he didn't murder anyone," said GQ. "And yet he remains ESPN's pet rock: a kind of Moral Superboy that the network can deploy whenever it senses your eyeballs wandering away from the screen. He is more valuable to the network as a nonplayer than as the Canadian Football League benchwarmer that he actually is. The less you see him bumble around on the field, the more Skip Bayless can turn his struggle into a kind of National Virtue Index."

Earlier this year, Tebow was named Forbe's most influential athlete in America for 2013. Despite his popularity with some fans, the free agent quarterback has failed to find work in the NFL since the Patriots released him, and he has turned down several offers to play in other leagues. He recently hired a broadcast agent, and may look for work in television broadcasting if he cannot find an opportunity to play in the NFL.

The least influential person of the year, according to GQ's list, is former NBA star Dennis Rodman, who visited North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un twice this year. The magazine says Rodman is a "Q-list celebrity willing to commit borderline treason just to hang out with a dictator who himself aspires to be a Q-list celebrity."

He is followed by celebrity chef Paula Deen, whose reputation took a hit after she was accused of making racial comments, and Anthony Weiner, the former U.S. congressman and New York City mayoral candidate whose career was tarnished by sexting scandals.

Among other notable figures on the list are Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI (no. 5), who GQ says "assumed the papacy with the sole mission of stubbornly defending all of its antiquated practices," and President Barack Obama (no. 17), who the magazine suggests has been better at giving speeches than making positive changes.

China aims to harness religious beliefs to promote harmony

China should harness the positive influence of moderate religious believers, including their traditions of benevolence and tolerance, and recognize their contributions to society, the country’s top religious affairs official wrote on Tuesday.

The ruling and officially atheist Communist Party, which values stability above all else, has tried to co-opt religion in recent years as a force for social harmony in a country where few believe in communism any more.

Wang Zuoan, head of the State Administration of Religious Affairs, wrote in the Communist Party’s official People’s Daily that even though most people in China have no religion, those who do have an important role to play in promoting harmony.

“We should pay great attention to the eagerness of religious believers,” Wang wrote. “Foster the positive contents of religion, expound upon religious doctrines which accord with the development needs of society.”

He added, “Guide religious believers to have correct beliefs and follow correct practices, carry out the religious principles of reconciliation, benevolence, tolerance and moderation.”

President Xi Jinping wants the party to be more tolerant of traditional faiths in the hope these will help fill a vacuum created by the country’s breakneck growth and rush to get rich, sources told Reuters in September.

Believers should be allowed to “earnestly practice what they advocate” and “form a common consensus on promoting social stability and harmony … under the leadership of the party and the socialist system,” Wang added.

About half of China’s estimated 100 million religious followers are Christians or Muslims, with the rest Buddhists or Daoists, the government says, though it thinks the real number of believers is probably much higher.

Rights groups say that despite promises to allow freedom of belief, the government in practice enforces tough controls, especially on Christians, Muslims and Tibetan Buddhists. Beijing has also banned several spiritual groups as “evil cults”.

Wang had written in April that the country was struggling to banish superstitious beliefs about events such as sickness and death, and warned against people being misled.

But in his new piece, Wang said that while it was important to crack down on what he called fanaticism and extremism, the country must recognize religious groups that work towards the common good, lest they feel discouraged.

He noted that after the 2010 earthquake in heavily Tibetan Yushu in Qinghai province, the government for the first time included a Tibetan Buddhist temple and a mosque in its formal commendations for relief work.

“This greatly encouraged those in the religious world and believers,” Wang added

Christian Missions in India Reportedly Facilitating 'Remarkable' Rise of Christianity

Christian missionary groups in India are reportedly helping with the remarkable rise in Christianity in the second most populous country in the world, especially among young people as well as middle and high caste Indians.

"With more than 71 million claiming Christianity, India is now the eighth largest Christian nation in the world," said Dick McClain, president and CEO of The Mission Society, publisher of Unfinished. "Yet with 456 languages and more than 2,611 distinct people groups, India still has more people groups unreached with the gospel than any other nation – 88 percent of its population."

The rise of Christianity is detailed in the latest issue of Unfinished magazine, where The Mission Society, which recruits, trains and sends Christian missionaries around the world, details how the Gospel is creating a "new India." The missionary efforts are reportedly reaching new groups beyond the lower caste and marginalized communities, who traditionally have been the more likely to be open to Christianity.

Indian anthropologist Prabhu Singh identifies five dominant themes that define the missional challenges in India, but also points out that the rise of Christianity, which is still a minority religion there, is also being met by an increase in religious animosity, resulting in persecution and violence against Christians.

The last official nationwide survey in India in 2001 on religious beliefs identified that only 2.3 percent, or 24 million people, identify as Christians. The Mission Society claims that that number has risen dramatically in the past decade, however.

Singh added in a separate blog that the Indian church also sends out thousands of its own missionaries to share with people the message of Christ, but many do not receive money from abroad for their purposes.

"For example, one south-India-based mission agency with nearly 2000 workers has an annual budget of almost nine million U.S. dollars, and all of its money is raised from Indians, both living in India and abroad," The Mission Society wrote in a blog post.

"Despite India's contribution to global missions and the rise of Global South Christianity, global missions continues under the grip of Western influence. How do we help, by God's grace, to rectify this? How do Americans begin to better regard our worldwide brothers and sisters as friends and equals in God's kingdom work?"

The latest Unfinished issue gives suggestions to believers for how they can pray for the "new India," and offers further statistical trends, including demographics on religion, hunger and suicide, and the rise of social media.

Former President George W. Bush Seeks for Jews to Accept Jesus

Former President George W. Bush spoke Thursday at a fundraiser for the Messianic Jewish Bible Institute, a group that promotes the idea that salvation through Jesus is consistent with Jewish teachings.

An announcement ahead of the event about the former president’s planned keynote drew criticism from Jewish leaders and groups. Under traditional Judaism, Jews do not regard Jesus as the divine messiah.
Former US President George W. Bush

In a column called “Why Jews Should Not Accept Jesus — Whatever George W. Bush Thinks,” Rabbi David Wolpe wrote that he was “bothered” by Bush’s plans.

“The sudden rise of ‘Messianic Jews’ owes more to a clever way of misleading untutored Jews than to making theological sense. It should not receive the imprimatur of a former President of the United States.”

Bush is an outspoken Christian, who has spoken extensively about the role his faith has had in his life. In 2005, he was sworn in for his second term as President of the United States with his family bible.

According to the Messianic Jewish Bible Institute web site, they work to “bring Jewish people into a personal relationship of faith with Yeshua the Messiah."

The annual fundraiser, dubbed “Rekindle 2013,” took place in Texas. Tickets ranged from $100 to $100,000.

Prayer for the Philippines

Three days after super typhoon Yolanda, one of the strongest storms in history, crashed into the Philippines, many survivors are still coming to grips with the level of devastation they are facing. Humanitarian agencies around the world have mobilized in order to bring aid to the storm’s victims, but the amount of loss is staggering and progress has been slow. In this time of crisis, many churches are calling on Christians to take an active role in the relief effort. The Pope himself has expressed solidarity with the victims of typhoon Yolanda, and encouraged pilgrims to reach out to storm victims in both prayer and action. According to CNA, Pope Francis led a brief prayer for the Philippians, before continuing to address the crowd.

“The Pontiff then exhorted, ‘let us try also to reach out to them with practical help.’ Secretary of State Parolin’s message explained that Pope Francis ‘is especially mindful of those who mourn the loss of their loved ones and of those who have lost their homes.’

‘In praying for all the people of the Philippines, the Holy Father likewise offers encouragement to the civil authorities and emergency personnel as they assist the victims of this storm,’ it continued.”

Other Christian organizations have also assembled to help those struggling with the storms aftermath, including international residents who have been unable to reach family members. One such Church is the Philippine International Bible Church in Laytonsville, Maryland. Among the congregation, several members have close relatives who were living in the path of the storm. One member, Alvenia Ropeta, recently told reporters that her 2-year-old son, Luke Ropeta, was living with her sister-in-law in a village at the time of the storm. Since then, they have been unable to contact one another, and Alvenia does not even know if they are still alive.

All Alvenia could hope to do was send messages through news reports,

“’Just be still. Just be still and hang in there. That's what I'm exactly doing over here. I'm putting all of my trust and faith that God is in control and He will make sure that we will get through all of these trials and calamities, that He will be taking care of us. And give Luke my warmest hug and kiss him for me,’ said Ropeta.”
The Christian humanitarian agency, Samaritan’s Purse, has recently launched a massive campaign in an effort to rescue those suffering from Yolanda’s aftermath. To donate, or to find more information on how you can get involved in the effort, please click here. Furthermore, CNN has provided its readers with a list of agencies currently working to provide resources to the storm-affected areas of the Philippians, for more information please click here. Remember that in all things God call us to be his hands of healing in a world full of despair. It is time for Christians to step forward and take action, please donate today.

China Asks Church for Help With Social Care

The Chinese government has welcomed the role of the church in providing social care in the country.China’s leaders have been holding a meeting this week in Beijing to discuss the economic and political agenda for the next decade, in which it seems the church will play a vital role.

“The government welcomes the support of the church,” said government official Wang Xinhua at a recent Shanghai conference on the role of Christianity in China, sponsored by the Bible Society. “We lack the resources to meet all the needs that we face, so we need religious organizations in order to do so.”

Wang said the “beliefs” and “love” of the church were an “advantage” to society. He added that China’s charitable sector was facing “a crisis of confidence” due to corruption scandals, saying the church was a less corrupt partner to the government.

Leading academic professor Choong Chee Pang told those at the conference, “Many social problems have their root causes in social injustice, the abuse of power, inequality, the widening gap between the rich and the poor due to mismanagement of the resources, corruption and bribery.”

In an outspoken move, the professor said that as the church took up the challenge of providing social care across China, particularly among the elderly and poor, it must not lose its prophetic role.

“The church needs to be a prophet and a servant,” he said. “This is not a problem in a free or democratic society, but in other societies it can be a sensitive issue. It is hard for the Chinese church to play the role of a prophet especially with a critical voice.”

Though it is the world’s second biggest economy, China is facing a social care crisis, particularly in caring for an increasingly elderly population.

According to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, by 2040 nearly 20 percent of China’s rural population will be aged over 65.

At the conference, the government called on the church to provide care for the elderly, as well as offer drug prevention and rehabilitation and to work with those living with HIV.

Sixty-four-year-old Pu Ti Hua has already benefited from the social care provided by China’s churches. During the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, she and her husband were made homeless. They joined around 200 people who sought sanctuary in the local church in the town of Yanting Yunxi.

“There’s no Christianity or churches where we lived,” says Ti Hua. “But for the first time I felt the warmth of these people and their love. I had been totally shaken, but I found peace here. I lost everything: my home and all my belongings. It was very difficult. I felt terrible. I was emptied out. I had nothing. But the church helped me get over it.”

Today Ti Hua and her husband Song Cheng live in two rooms above the church. Here they return the kindness done to them by cooking food for church members three days a week.
